Wastewater applications: Food industry, Rendering industry

There are indeed some very useful applications of ozone in industrial Wastewater aside from the most obvious in disinfection.

The largest opportunity is in H2S elimination in occupied areas of the plant. Especially the DAF rooms. Ozone can be used to stop H2S from even being formed at all.

There are also methods to enhance the performance of almost any DAF wastewater system. It is comprised of an Ozone system that is specially designed to operate at a specific concentration of ozone by weight. The results vary depending on the type of water that is being treated but generally range from 10% to 50% DAF performance improvement in TKN, BOD, COD, and TSS removal. Plants typically see a reduction in Chemical consumption of 5% to 20%, Polymer programs are improved and in some cases are able to outperform Ferric Chloride programs. We see very much improved plant odor characteristics, and good floc production at a wider PH range typically. The almost elimination of odor from the DAF is also a side benefit.  Some plants witness dramatic reductions in sludge amounts, in others dramatic increases. That depends on how effective your system was prior to the Ozone system installation.

Wastewater Applications
 

Ozone is not magic.  It will not solve everyone’s problems, however if it is applied correctly and your plant is competently run, it will make it run better and smoother. There are basically three things that happen with Ozone in the wastewater system:

  1. Air is not very soluble most gases aren’t, however oxygen is much more soluble than air, and Ozone is even more soluble than Oxygen especially in dirty water, the dirtier the better. It really improves the level of dissolved oxygen in the water and makes more and smaller bubbles. This increases surface area and gives you two benefits. Better flocculation and a satisfaction of some of the oxygen demand.

  2. Ozone is not just a great oxidizer it is also a microfloculant. With this system the DAF can work on things that it previously had no effect on or opportunity to remove. Thus improving the effectiveness of the chemical program.

  3. Ozone is an oxidizer, but what is really great about it, is that once it has oxidized something (which reduces oxygen demand) it returns to oxygen from whence it was made and is available to satisfy oxygen demand. But you can’t use too  much. It has to be just right. And of course that’s where the patents come in.

I know of Six such operating Wastewater plants in the Food processing and Rendering industry and all six of those plants would be hard pressed to operate without they’re Ozone system.
